a front row seat

"This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night..." ~Joshua 1:8

What does a girl do when she gets news? The kind of news that is unexpected, heart breaking, and out of her control? The kind of news that, if she chose to meditate on it, would cause continuous sorrow, hurt, and even depression.

She felt her mind leading her there. She heard his whispers, knowing he hoped she'd absorb them & claim them. She hurt, and she knew ultimately, it was out of her control.

And, just like that, she could easily feel herself becoming like the Israelites. The ones who saw the miracles of His hand yesterday but didn't trust Him for today. And then she recollected...

"I will cry to God Most High, To God who accomplishes all things for me." Psalm 57:2

"I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted." Job 42:2

So, in the receiving of the news, she's reminded. And she's glad. Glad it's not in her control...but His. Glad that He may use her despite her. Glad she can find joy amidst the hurt. And she's excited. Excited because He will be honored. Glorified. Shown. Beyond what she's capable of...because she knows...

He, the Most High God is her Hope. Her Savior. Her Redeemer. Her Provider. Then and there, her mind becomes fixed on Him. She meditates on His plans. His will. She longs to please Him rather than others. Her desires render glory to Him rather than herself. And she finds rest for her mind and heart. The voice speaking lies is drowned out. The Word of Him brings forth the light, hope, and promises that were already there.

So now, she acknowledges her position. It's a front row seat. To watch Him work within her. Amidst her. Despite her.

~His reminders of His sovereignty through a recent miracle.

~His mercy in using the miry clay.

~A growing vocabulary in a toddler that makes me giggle. This morning it was because of a toy that was noisy and wouldn't turn off. His reply? "Oh my goodness! Hush! Hush!"

~An 8 year old girl who likes to cuddle and thinks it's for her benefit...but it's for her mama's, too.

~A husband who is compassionate, a leader, and who is expressing his availability to be used by Him.

~Prayer warriors.

~Silly songs and an excuse to dance.

it's You

"Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me." Psalm 54:4

Though it's in You I know we mustered up strength, I am overwhelmed by Your fortitude.

"The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song." Psalm 28:7

Though it's in You we saw there was hope, I am overwhelmed by the protection of your mighty Hand.

"Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God." Psalm 146:5

Though it's through You there was perseverance, I am overwhelmed by the enduring love you've shown.

"Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands."  Deuteronomy 7:9

Though it's by You our doubts were devoured, I am completely in awe of You.

"For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome." Deuteronomy 10:17

the God who hears

Monday, we saw Tinkle's pediatrician for her chest pain. Her doctor felt it necessary to run some tests on her heart. As I clung to scripture and waited, I prayed. I prayed some more. And I prayed some more. We received news yesterday that all is well with her heart. Praise Jesus! To Him be the glory.

We also got news of another. A loved one who has had her share of spiritual attack lately. One that I've prayed for and over as if she were my own. Her news wasn't as happy. As I sat and pondered over my prayers and over my God, I was reminded and I am claiming the lessons I've been learning in my Precept Daniel 1 Bible study.
  • God is the God of history. He created time. He knew then and He knows now what is to come.   Nothing comes to Him by surprise and He sets the paths of His people.
  • He may not deliver His people from it, but He will deliver them through it. As Daniel faced the den of lions and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego faced the fiery furnace, their God could have removed them from their circumstances. He is all powerful. Instead, he allowed them to face the danger, and He chose to deliver them through it. And He received the glory from it.
So, the same God who gave us the good news about Tinkle is the same God who is in control of this sweet girl's circumstances. He will deliver her. I'm claiming it. And in the end, the glory is His. It already is.

And for the record, I hate Satan. His schemes on His church, His people. This enemy will not prevail. The battle has already been won. His church will rise up and continue to glorify Him through it all.

Through you we push back our enemies;
through your name we trample our foes.
I do not trust in my bow,
my sword does not bring me victory;
but you give us victory over our enemies,
you put our adversaries to shame.
In God we make our boast all day long,
and we will praise your name forever.
Selah
Psalm 44:5-8

when faith cries out

It was Saturday morning. We sat on the sidelines, watching her play. Me...not sitting so much...moving...capturing shots.

She just wasn't herself. Not running with her normal pep to her step...slower...and then...grabbing her chest...several times. Then I stopped capturing shots...more focused on her. Half time, I moved in on  her. She, not wanting to be pulled from the game, denied anything..."I'm not hurting." Once in the car, she admitted to the chest pain.

She's had it before. When running. A couple of years ago. I've chalked it up to a pulled muscle, as she quickly recuperated, mentioned it to her pediatrician, but now...we need to know it's nothing more. We will see her pediatrician this morning. As I sit here and write this, I am concerned. I do have butterflies in my stomach. But I also have an unexplained peace in it all.

This peace. It doesn't come from a confidence in finding nothing. My hope is not in her wonderful pediatrician.  It doesn't come from quality testing, a multitude of treatments, or even good diagnoses. It's a peace that comes from Him.

This peace is simply from this mother's heart leaning on Him. The Unfathomable. Uncontainable. Unstoppable. All Powerful. All Knowing. Savior. Redeemer. King. Yahweh. Adonai. LORD. Regardless of what news we get, He is unchangeable, and she is His. You see, I know the true battle of her heart has already been won.

So, before I pick her up to take her to this appointment, I will, again, call on Him. I will fall prostrate before Him and cry out on her behalf. And I'll know, all is well. Regardless.

Psalm 121

A song of ascents.

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills—

where does my help come from?

2 My help comes from the LORD,

the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—

he who watches over you will not slumber;

4 indeed, he who watches over Israel

will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The LORD watches over you—

the LORD is your shade at your right hand;

6 the sun will not harm you by day,

nor the moon by night.

7 The LORD will keep you from all harm—

he will watch over your life;

8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going

both now and forevermore.

multitude monday

As I soak up the gifts of today, I am so thankful that this faith in the Living God is devouring up my focus on the to-do list, and instead, allowing me to see the gift of the moment.
#1...the amazing blessing of hearing "mama" 8,679,543,678 times a day...all from the same little guy

#2...a quiet moment that allowed my quiet time to soak in

#3...a set of chocolate chip muffin hands & face to wipe down

#4...a daughter who's enjoying her 4th book of the day

#5...a little guy who calls every color "yewow" (yellow)

#6...the bible study that deepens my knowledge and love for His Word

#7...the laundry that reminds me that I have these precious little bodies to care for

#8...the laundry basket that can hold the laundry that can wait another day

#9...the little tikes trike, sidewalk chalk, electric car, and jump rope that are calling my name...because these littles can't wait another day

#10...knowing that the day will end in prayer over them...because I can.

sick

Today, I woke up sick. Not the queezy tummy, sore throat, achey joints kind of sick. The kind of sick that comes from noticing truth that isn't erupting from my own life journey. The kind of sick that comes from seeing sin...acknowledging it with remorse and sorrow.

Yesterday, we had an amazing opportunity  to serve/make breakfast for the homeless in our community. Tinkle & I woke up early to "cook" sausage biscuits (it was frozen, but trust me when I say they wouldn't have wanted homemade biscuits from me). We watched several people come up, take the food with thanks, then leave. Each life had their own story...a story I don't know. Though I don't know their story, one family caught my eye and heart in an unshakeable way.

She came with her 4 children...2 boys...2 girls. The children gazing at the food unsure of what to choose. Polite. Not grabbing or claiming. Waiting patiently for someone to offer. The mom helped each child get their food & drink. But when we asked her what she wanted, in a fashion that is so true of a mother, she said, "I'm fine." It was more the tone in her voice. The one that any mother hears and knows. It was the kind that said, "I'm here for my children, not for me." After much encouragement, I think she finally got something for herself. Or maybe she took it for her children later. I don't know. But, in that moment, when one mother's heart spoke, it broke this mother's heart.

A heart broken because of noticing I've been too comfortable. And, just in case you're getting too comfortable, please, I urge you to take a peek here.

So, this faith journey is helping devour the cozy state of comfort. Eyes that only look at the world around me the way I want to see it. Yes, I was definitely getting too comfortable.

God is still speaking

while ebay is paying me nothing for this, if you happen to work for ebay, i'll gladly accept payment.
thank you and the end.
The adoption we feel led toward kindof feels like it's at a stand still at the moment.

I've thought about it so often, mostly with questions.

When?
Where?

And the question that has been weighing most heavily...
How will the finances come to allow it?

Lately, we've gotten lots of extra expenses flowing our way. Nothing to the point of unbearable, but rather, uncomfortable. Medical bills from Winkle's surgery, medical bills from my tests, upcoming fall clothes for the kids, bookbag, lunch box, and school supplies, continuing ed classes for me to keep my license, and the list goes on.

Some may see it as mere coincidence that these expenses began shortly after I began praying as to how God would open up the door for us financially to adopt. But here's the story God showed me...

Tinkle's book bag is too small for this year. I didn't want to go the cheap route & invest in a book bag that wasn't good quality only to have to purchase another one mid year. So, I began looking online, in magazines, & in the stores for "the" book bag. They aren't cheap. To be honest, it's not that we couldn't afford to buy the nicer book bag from the nicer store, but it wasn't an expense I wanted to add during this time. We try hard to live within our means & be good stewards of what the Lord has given us. This book bag came at a time I was questioning God. It came at a time where I was wondering how He would provide. Without being intentional about it, this book bag became a symbol of God's provision.

I have to be honest. I stressed over the book bag. Silly, I know. In the process of trying to find a cheaper alternative, I prayed, asked other's opinions on book bag quality, and asked others to be on the look out for me. Someone suggested I try ebay.

While ebay had a decent selection of book bags, finding the right size became difficult as all of them seemed to have monogrammed names already on them. Pre-monogrammed items has never been an option since Tinkle's name is not spelled the traditional way.

Type name brand, type "book bag".
Click.
Cute bag.

Already monogrammed...
with Tinkle's name...spelled the way she spells it.

While I know this may seem like a silly little story for some, I know God's hand was in it. While someone else ended up owning this book bag, this book bag was meant for Tinkle. Handpicked by Him. He was reminding me that He is in control. That He will provide. That He cares enough about the details, that He's spelling it all out for me.

For now, someone else may have this child, but this child was meant for our family. Handpicked by Him. He will provide. In His time. In His way.

Sunday, someone approached my husband & said he had a dream of a mission trip. We were there again with our family...but in this dream...we had another little girl.

So, today I'm thankful that God cares about the details of it all...down to a simple book bag. I'm linking up with Emily today for Tuesdays unwrapped.

being a mama

I am a mama to 2 kids. Seriously. Sometimes I wake up completely excited all over again. The pure
J. O. Y. of these little ones sends me over the moon in excitement.

Maybe it's the struggle to have children that keeps me immensely in love with them. Maybe it's the amazing relationship I have with my own mother that keeps me totally over the top for them. Maybe it's struggles I faced as a child that has me completely convinced I have it all now.

Or maybe...

maybe it's Him.

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Psalm 127:3

The relationship I have with Him now.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above James 1:17a

The way He keeps my eyes focused on His goodness.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. Ecclesiastes 3:11a

His blessings. Maybe that's what keeps me so smitten over them. Yeah...it's Him.

Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!  2 Corinthians 9:15

the call

Do you remember this post? I was feeling like God was calling me to do and be more.
Well, here's part 2 of the story...

If you are familiar with my other blog, you know Winkle did not come to us easily. I can honestly say that God's hand was evident throughout the process of wanting Winkle, conceiving Winkle, and delivering Winkle. I knew this was God's plan for our lives.

After I became pregnant with Winkle, I felt a gentle nudging (which I know to be the Holy Spirit) that God was going to continue me on a different journey of motherhood. I really felt called to adopt. Please let me assure you here that this HAD to be the Holy Spirit because this pregnancy did not offer any human desire to think of future children. I felt, though, this wasn't the time to approach Honey, as he would only brush it off as pregnancy hormones and too much time on my hands, because of bedrest, to ponder life's path.

~Fast forward to Winkle being days old~

The nudging began again...this call to adopt. Again, I knew this had to come from the Holy Spirit because nothing says birth control like breastfeeding a newborn, no sleep, and recuperating from a difficult delivery. I tried to ignore it and just gently brush it away, because I knew that if it was truly a call from God, He would have to give it to Honey, too...and well...Honey would have to bring up the conversation first so I KNOW this is God's call. By the way, I hope I'm not the only one who does God this way...the "well, if this is really from You, then You'll do this so I know" thing. Yeah, it's wrong...I know, but, come on...show me some love and don't leave me hanging...you do it, too, right?

~Anyway, now let's fast foward to Winkle being around 6 months old~

Man, my God is persistent. Which, by the way, I thank God for because He should've given up on me a loooooooong time ago. That same nudging is there, rearing it's head, only this time, I feel led to tell Honey...because now He's starting to give me direction. So, I told Honey my feeling led in this direction, my knowledge that He doesn't guide us in different directions since we are now one, and ask him to pray for 2 years (I have no idea why 2 years...I just felt led to 2 years) with an open mind to hear from Him.

So, about a month ago, Honey tells me he knows adoption is God's plan for our lives. The other day I saw him searching the internet about adoption. As I see God growing this desire inside my husband, it thrills me. I've been ready to see God move him, and not just me, and see God set us on the same path.

So, now is my time to come beside Honey, letting Honey lead this God-given plan with God's direction. We're praying about when & where to adopt. As we do, I look forward to seeing God continue to work. So, today, I'm thanking God that He is devouring our plan for ourselves, and setting us on a path that He's called us toward...together. Join me for Thankful Thursday.

So, in this memorial box I put a sermon from our pastor, that you can find here, that confirmed to my Honey our call to adopt.

when life throws me the question "why?"

I just recently heard news that someone I've known for many years is sick. Really sick. She's a private person, so it didn't surprise me that she's told no one. It did surprise me, though, that she never sought medical attention.

She's brilliant. Really. Some may not know that because she has such a type A personality, she's very introverted, and she absorbs herself in her work...in the medical profession. Which is why I know she knew and understood what was going on with her.

So many questions.
Why didn't she get help?

Why did she deny it when people asked?

Why would she choose death rather than life?

As I thought about all these things and the lady behind them, I thought about my King. There are so many questions in life that we will never know the answer to in this life. When I don't know the answers, I can look to the One who holds them all. Steadily keeping my eyes. Fixed. On. Him.

Living life with my eyes fixed on Him isn't easy. It's a struggle to not glare, much less glance, at my earthly circumstances, my own incapable feet, my multiple failures, or my expectations of how this life should be lived out. BUT PRAISE JESUS!!!!

Because when I take my eyes away from those things, and I fix my eyes on Him, He shows me His earthly walk, His capable feet, His triumphs within weak vessels, and His plan for how this life should be lived out. So, though I don't know the answers, I am thankful that this thing called faith in the Living God is devouring my view on life from an earthly perspective.

Thankful that I'm learning to trust Him more when life throws me the question "why"...as I join Thankful Thursday. As I do, would you join me here, too, to worship?

Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. Psalm 20:7

her lesson...my lesson

It's sometimes amusing to me how God works. I think He's teaching her a lesson, and then I realize, it's my lesson to be learned.

During our family devotion time, we read scripture, then the story for application, and then we take turns praying. Our scripture reading, story, and prayer time are taken in turns...allowing the entire family to participate..other than the 17 month old, of course.

None of this is done in an organized fashion, mind you. It's just someone saying, "I'll read tonight", and then "your turn to pray" kind of deal.

Our 7 year old hasn't taken her turn to pray in quite some time. In fact, even before our regular nights of family devotion, we would still pray together, and she would choose not to pray. She would continue to say, "I don't want to." or "I don't know what to say."

At first, I would accept her reply and pray out loud for us. Then, I began to say the prayer in small increments and allow her to repeat each word...hoping to teach her how to pray.

Her prayer life hasn't always been this stagnant. I know she knows how to pray, because she's done it in front of me before. Honestly, her prayer life would encourage me in times past...the honesty, true thankfulness of little details...they blessed my heart so much.

"Thank you, God, for shoes so I don't have to walk everywhere barefoot."

"Thank you, God, for my pillow so I can sleep on something soft at night."

This list would go on and on as she would think about each detail of her life as a blessing. But lately...she's at a loss for words.

Earlier this week during devotion, I was determined it would be her night to pray. She said her usual, "I don't know what to say" routine. I tried to encourage her but to no avail. I felt huge disappointment, frustration, and honestly, anger well up inside of me. You see, I realized at that moment, I can't make her pray.

Control. That's what I wanted. Now don't get me wrong, my motive isn't wrong...but my tight, white knuckled grip on the situation is. I want my children to know Christ at a young age, to choose His plan for their lives early on, to desire His purpose for them. But I'm realizing that's not my choice...it's beyond my control.

So, in that moment, we had a talk. My child, eyes now widened at the concern she heard in my tone and the words I chose, listened intently.

I will never make you pray. Mommy and Daddy hope you choose to talk to God, and when you do, you make Him happy. You can talk to God about anything...the same way you talk to mommy, daddy, and your friends. When you talk to your friends, you get to know them better, and you grow in your friendship. When you talk to Mommy and Daddy, we get to know each other better, and we grow closer together. It's the same way with God. When you choose to talk to God, you are making a decision to know Him better and grow in your relationship with Him. When you choose not to talk to God, you are making a decision to not grow in your relationship with Him. That's a decision you have to make, and it's not one that Mommy or Daddy can make for you. But each time you choose to not talk to Him, you need to understand what kind of decision that really is...you're choosing not to grow closer to Him.

After this talk, I prayed out loud. For her. For my 17 month old, and for my future children. That they would desire to know Him. They would choose Him. Because I'm realizing, my prayer life is the greatest power I have over this situation. My grasp will never be enough, but He is enough. So today, I'm grateful that my faith is devouring my desire to control situations that I can't control over my life or my children's lives. My clenched, white knuckled fist holding on and constantly trying to regrasp what can't be held by me, is now a hand that is wide open, fingers spread to it's fullest span, arm held high. And I'm learning to trust Him more. For this lesson, I'm so thankful. I'm joining Thankful Thursday today.

And by the way, she prayed the next night with absolutely no encouragement from us.

He must become greater; I must become less. John 3:30

when God speaks

I've been hesitating to write this post. I'm not really sure what to say. See, sometimes it's easier to ignore what's happening than submit to the reality of it.

Lately, I've been hearing God speak to me. It first happened at the beach and I write about it in this post (you can click there to see it) from my other blog (you can click to see)...God speaking to my heart. At first He was that quiet, gentle voice whispering w/in me. I love those moments...when I'm quiet. Listening to God. Hearing from Him. Whispers of love. But there's more.

Lately, His talks w/ me have become a little louder. OK...a lot louder...more like shouts. You know...the kind you can't ignore...when it's coming from every direction? So, you may be asking, what is it He keeps shouting at me?

Well, I haven't really told anyone, b/c I'm a little nervous about what it actually means. You know...what He really has in store. But here goes.

"My child, I made you for more!"

Sounds sweet. Sounds exciting, right? But here's the thing. While I am doing what I feel He has called me to do at this given time, I just can't shake His voice. While I'm trying to figure out what this "more" really intells (I have my own guesses, but I can't say they are actually from Him), He's also been speaking to me about something else.

God has entrusted me with sooo much. So, what kind of job am I doing with what He's entrusted to me already?

Well, I could hide behind my running list. The involved church goer. The loving wife. The involved mommy. The classroom mom. The caring child. The faithful friend. The problem is, I can hide behind these things from anyone BUT the living God. He knows what He has entrusted to me...and He knows where I am failing. So, I must be honest...come out of my hiding...and just say it like it is.

I haven't been doing a good job teaching my kids God's Word. Now, if you know me, you know I could hide behind my excuses...those things I tell myself all the time. There's not enough time today. She's got to be in bed on time...she has a test tomorrow. I talk to her about You all the time. I shape her through life lessons for You. She reads the Bible at church. See, the problem is, I can hide behind these things from anyone BUT the living God. He knows what He has entrusted me with...and He knows where I am failing. So, again, I must be honest...come out of hiding behind my excuses...and just say it like it is.

I have not been giving God His rightly earned spot w/in my family every day. You see, my job as a parent has a lot, obviously, to do w/ me & my children...but not completely. Stay with my here. My job as a parent has everything to do w/ my relationship w/ God. He's the One who has given me this job, entrusted me w/ these precious lives, led me toward this amazing life of mommyhood. Because of that, I am responsible to Him as to how I perform this job. My time w/ my children is too short, too cluttered w/ other distractions, and much too precious for me to choose the path I've been on. Complacency. Thinking I have time...to shape, to grow, to nurture, to guide these little minds on the things of Christ. How can I do that if I don't have them in His Word DAILY?

Here we go again...I could hide behind the measuring stick. You know, the one that I use to measure the job I'm doing compared to other people? Now, of course, these are things I'd never say out loud...just within, where no one can hear, right? Boy, this is where it gets sticky. I taught her the books of the Bible over the summer...I don't hear other parents doing that. I take her to church regularly...lots of parents don't. I talk about Him daily...not just on Sunday like some parents. But He hears my running list as I heighten my parenting stick. He knows what He's entrusted me w/...and He knows where I'm failing. So, I have to come out of hiding behind my pride and say it like it is.

Comparing myself to others can always make me look better, because I get to pick who I'm comparing myself to. But if I look toward Christ, and I pull out that now not-so-handy measuring stick, well...I'm just a mess.

So, here it is. My time to step up. My time to rise to be what He's called me to be. My time to stop the excuses. It's time to be more. He can't entrust me with more if I'm not willing to use what He's given me for His good...for His glory. It begins today. So, today, I'm thankful that this thing called faith in my God is devouring my complacency. Today, I'm unwrapping this gift @ tuesdays unwrapped.

"from the one who is entrusted with much, much more will be asked" Luke 12:48

behind the name

Faith devours. I love the implications in the word devour. Really, it's such a picture word. Teeth clenched into. Tearing away at. Destroying. Bigger. Stronger. Mightier.

Living a life of faith isn't for the faint of heart. Yes, it can be difficult. It isn't, though, putting on your big girl panties & dealing with it. That would imply that I have control...that I am the capable one. That it's me who is bigger. Stronger. Mighter. That would be fun to believe for the moment...super mom...super wife...super church worker...here to save the day! I don't know about you, but life quickly proves this dream untrue.

You see, living a life of faith really hasn't got a lot to do w/ me...or you, does it? It is simply living in the power & presence of the Holy Spirit. Allowing Him control over my everyday circumstances. Faith, after all, is a gift from God. And boy am I glad it's Him I can rely on and not my super-hero-me imaginatives. He is bigger. Stronger. Mightier.

It certainly isn't passive, though. It's a choice. Choosing to look at the God who is in control rather than at the mess of a situation. Believing His Word despite the circumstances that surround me...whether it's a mess my child just created, the monotony of laundry, or a real "in your face" kind-of mess within my life.

This blog is simply about everyday living...stories friends share with each other. Allowing myself to see that my God is at work. Choosing to look toward Him. So take your shoes off, have a seat, grab a cup of coffee. Let's talk about my God.
